Rehearsal is every Monday at 7pm at the Shak. Join us at any time!
  • We welcome all Stanford students from complete beginners (no musical experience) to expert musicians.
  • We provide instruments, music, uniforms, people to help you learn, a snazzy rehearsal facility, lotsa funk, 100% free of charge!
  • We perform on the field at football games and also on many other occasions

Attendance by members apart from staph is completely voluntary, so the number of people at any event varies, but for football games we scatter with 80 to 120 people. Approximately 40 bandfolk cheer on the women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball teams each and every game.

The Band is what you make it to be. You want to do something wholesome? We perform for the Special Olympics, Save the Music, and various other charities across the bay area. Are you into humor? We can turn your joke into a complicated, over the top stunt involving hundreds of people. Are you a sports fan? We go to dozens of games every year to watch Stanford's amazing sports programs crush the competition. Hate sports? We also go to elementary schools, fairs, preschools, business openings, non-profit conferences, weddings and funerals. Too busy for a big commitment? That's alright! Show up once a week (or less). We'll be okay. Want a big commitment? Awesome! We perform multiple times a week and we'll keep you away from school for the full duration of March Madness if you want.

If this sounds right up your alley, come to rehearsals at 7pm, Mondays at the Band Shak (located at the pin on the map above).

Still confused? Sudden amnesia? Read our FAQs below, or contact your friendly neighborhood recruiterz: [email protected].

Frequently Asked Questions

WHO CAN JOIN BAND AND WHEN AND HOW?
Anyone who is currently a Stanford student, every Monday around 7pm at the band shak, show up and rock out.
You don’t need musical experience to be part of band. Even if you come in without knowing an instrument, you can still perform on your very first day with band as long as you’re willing to RTFO and fake it til ya make it. We will teach you how to play and provide plenty of opportunities for practicing with an audience :)

If you’re already an accomplished musician, that’s fabulous. This is a great place to meet other music nerds, learn new songs (or a new instrument!), jam out, and perform as much as you want. If you play something that doesn’t fit into one of the sections, no problem. The funkier the better, and there’s always a place for you.

I’M A TOTAL BEGINNER, HOW DO I LEARN TO PLAY?
  • Rehearsals every Monday, 7pm
  • Performances (for real tho, just keep showing up and rocking out until you eventually know what you’re doing)
  • Beginner sectionals hosted by your section leader
  • Independent practice at open shak
  • Online resources
  • Lessons with a music teacher-- ask your section leader about opportunities to get guidance from a professional

WILL I HAVE TO SPEND MONEY?
Band has all the instruments and uniforms you’ll need, and you will never have to buy anything or pay any fees to be part of the group. We even have complete funding for travel, including both road and airtripz.

WHEN DOES BAND MEET?
We rehearse every Monday at 7:00pm. It’s a great opportunity to practice your instrument and get to know other band members, as well as an excellent stress reliever and homework break.

HOW MUCH STUFF DO I HAVE TO GO TO?
In the LSJUMB, we don’t have formal requirements that typical marching bands have. But we do ask that members come to rehearsals and athletic/performance events (depending on the season). We weigh football more because we benefit from having a massive amount of people running around on the field for pregame and half time shows, whereas with Maples events we can get by with 25-50 people. By no means do you have to come to everything, but we want you to come to as much as you can (when the band is huge it’s simply more fun)!

DOES BAND DO STUFF OTHER THAN FOOTBALL?
Band plays at every home football, basketball, and women’s volleyball game. We also perform at community events on campus and around the Bay Area, both for charity causes and to fund our organization. Previous highlights include upstaging DJ Khaled at his own publicity appearance and shredding guests’ eardrums at Marissa Meyer’s Halloween party. Also any rally with kids. Here’s what we’re up to throughout the year:

Fall:
  • Frosh rehearsal
  • Football
  • Volleyball
  • Some Basketball
  • Mutha Fuckin Big Game Week
  • Rallies

Winter:
  • The Rose Bowl! :’(
  • Basketball
  • Tree Week
  • Rallies

Spring:
  • Dollie Splash
  • Celebrate the Music Festival
  • UC Davis Picnic Day
  • Admit Weekend
  • Fountain rallies
  • Rallies

WHAT DO WE WEAR?
For Band members, we have got three uniforms depending on the event (we will always provide the blazers, vests, bucket hats, ties and rally):
  • Football:
    • Windz: Black Pants/Leggings (no shorts), Collared White Shirt (ideally collared but a plain white shirt is also fine), Bucket Hat, Funky Tie, LSJUMB Blazer (Toobz can wear an LSJUMB vest)
    • Drumz: White pants/Leggings (no shorts; since white pants are hard to come by band will often buy extras, you just need to ask), Black Shirt/Graphic Tee, Bucket Hat/Snapback, LSJUMB Vest
  • Maples Events/Softball
    • Everyone: White T-Shirt, LSJUMB Vest, Jeans, Bucket Hat
  • Rallies
    • Everyone: Pretty much anything you want, the wackier the better! This clothing style is one we simply call “rally.”

WHICH SECTION SHOULD I JOIN?
There are eight sections:
  • ABF Drumz (percussion)
  • Altoz (alto saxophones)
  • Tenrz (tenor saxophones)
  • Mellz (mellophones)
  • Bonz (trombones)
  • Trumpz (trumpets)
  • CPG (clarinets, piccolos, flutes, violins, etc.)
  • Tööbz (tubas)

Aside from the instruments they play, the sections are more alike than they are different. Know that you are free to switch sections at any time-- we encourage people to bounce around different sections until you find one where you feel at home. If you want an intro to a section leader or feel awkward going by yourself, catch a Recruiter ([email protected]) and we can get you connected.
