The Stanford band is brought to you by the letter A, the number 10, and generous alumni and friends like you.

Help power the mayhem and madness! Being spontaneous is a lot more work than it seems, and while the LSJUMB is free to be irreverent, being irreverent isn’t free. We’re a high-functioning, high-kicking, and high-on-life student-run musical ensemble set on spreading funk and bringing joy. You can help keep it that way!
Give to LSJUMB!

Beginnings
Do you remember the first time you were exposed to the Stanford Band, on a clear and promising Saturday on The Farm? Perhaps you were a Band member and remember the tacky ties, stylish black matador pants, and cardinal red jackets. Or maybe you knew someone in the Band, and you want to honor the freedom and fun they experienced in our ranks. Or it could be that you just loved us from afar. No matter what brings you here, we’re deeply grateful for your consideration.

Money. That’s What I Want.
The LSJUMB cobbles together its operating budget
from a combination of student fees, University and athletic department allocations, compensation for
rallies and performances, and gifts from people like
you. If it sounds complicated and a bit insecure, it is. We’d like to fix that by leaning on you.
Everybody’s Everything
Why donate? The more secure we can make the Band’s budget outside of normal University channels, the more we
can keep it independent and the larger the role students can play in running it. There are several vehicles available to you.

Endowments are intended to be permanent, are invested in parallel with the Stanford endowment, and proceeds can be spent up to an annual limit set by the Board of Trustees (e.g., 5% of the fund’s market value). Each endowment specifies allowed expenses, and most of them require that the Band remain a “student-run” organization.

If you’re considering an endowment gift to the Band directed towards a specified purpose, please review the fund
descriptions below for guidance.
  • Endowed Marching Band Operations Fund (fund code KBAND) (established in 2013) – Established to recognize the 50th year since the origin of the modern LSJUMB, these funds are used for the Band’s regular operating expenses. Current LSJUMB management considers this to be the Fund that offers the most flexibility for funding Band operations.

  • Dr. Arthur P. Barnes Directorship Fund (KASAO) (1999) – The primary purpose is the permanent endowment of the position of Director of LSJUMB.
  • Robby Beyers Fund for the LSJUMB (KMMMD) (2021) – Honoring the long-time volunteer photographer of the Stanford Band, it is dedicated to supporting activities, equipment, or travel of the Band.
  • Bill Goldenberg Memorial Fund (KAQYW) (1984) – Set up by the family of a non-Band alumnus who admired the band, the fund is restricted to purchase and/or maintenance of instruments and uniforms.
Picture
  • Dan Bentley Dollie Fund (KDOLL) (2007) – Established with a gift from a trombone player who was a big fan of the Dollies, it is restricted to Dollies expenses.
  • Stanford Band Endowment Fund (NAARD) (1993) A sort of petty cash fund, it can be used for miscellaneous band expenses (Band and Dollie training; purchase and maintenance of instruments, uniforms, props and other capital equipment)

Expendable Funds are short-term, entirely spendable, and can be closed when fully depleted. Basically like a checking account.

  • Stanford Band Fund (GAPDK) – General support for the LSJUMB and Dollies.

In-kind gifts – if you’d like to donate musical instruments, or, for instance, a bus ride to an away game, contact Russ Gavin at [email protected].

Legacy gifts: If you are interested in including gifts to the LSJUMB and Dollies as part of your estate planning, several methods are available. For more information and guidance, contact [email protected], (650) 725-4358, or visit plannedgiving.stanford.edu. Please be sure to clearly indicate the proportion meant for the LSJUMB and the fund codes.

To learn more about the purposes, uses, and restrictions on endowed or expendable funds, please contact Russ Gavin (Director of LSJUMB) at [email protected] or Gary Tyrrell (Stanford Band Alumni Board Chair) at [email protected].

Don’t let another day go by without doing your part to make the world more fun, and know that you’ve helped bring the funk and kept a few gifted youths off the streets. Visit giving.stanford.edu to make an online gift to the LSJUMB and Dollies, and to find instructions for other methods of giving (e.g., check, securities, etc.) Remember to designate the fund code for directing your gift. [On the “Direct your gift” menu, choose “Other Stanford Designation”; then enter the fund code in the “Other” box.]

P.S. Money may not buy happiness, but it CAN rent a lot of JOY. Give the Gift of JOY! TODAY!
