Stanford Band Alumni Board

The mission of the Stanford Band Alumni Board (SBAB) is to champion the long-term vitality of the Stanford Band as a rewarding and enjoyable experience for today’s students and to maintain the connection between the Band and generations of former students who participated in the Band as musicians, staff, Trees, and Dollies.

The Stanford Band has a unique position among student groups. Although it has a University instructor as its Musical Director and official faculty advisor, operationally it has a tradition of autonomy as a student-run organization. The SBAB strongly supports maintaining this tradition of the Band being truly and meaningfully student-run. The Band receives financial support in part from the University’s Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation (DAPER), in part from endowment funds established by the Band’s alumni and friends, and in part from other University sources. The Stanford Band Alumni Board speaks on behalf of the Band’s thousands of alumni – the largest body of alumni for any extracurricular activity except intercollegiate sports - in supporting the Band, offering advice and counsel, and helping everyone involved with the organization navigate the turbulent waters of campus politics and policies.

Members of SBAB are committed to -

• Help develop fundraising strategies; cultivate alumni donors; monitor the use of
  endowed funds for the Band’s benefit;
• Meet monthly (when needed, more frequently) with the Band’s student
  management and its faculty director, receiving reports on the Band’s successes
  and challenges, and making recommendations where appropriate;
• Plan and assist the Band staff in running alumni reunions;
• Discuss the Band’s activities, financial affairs, budgets, recruitment, and morale,
  as well as performance travel opportunities;
• Serve as the eyes and ears of the alumni community when concerns are
  expressed about anything that might impact the Band’s ability to remain as a
  positive experience for students and a creative and dynamic force on campus;
• Act as a hub among the current Band, alumni, and the University community for
  important communications.
